· Set in Kirk’s Three Kingdoms, roughly based on Japan’s Warring States period, Nightblade is an engaging, oftentimes dark and sad story with compelling characters. However, it could stand to be better executed. Writing and Performance ~ Ryan Kirk has a great writing style which is complimented by Andrew Tell (narrator) perfectly. It's a bit hard to explain, but both do an awesome job in their roles so I'll leave it at that. Kirk is able to paint amazing scenes of combat, portray characters' feelings, and use just the right amount of detail. Book 1. Ryan Kirk With the realm on the brink of war, the once-celebrated blades have become an easy target for the rage of its devastated citizens. The nightblade warrior Asa’s lifelong quest for vengeance is over, but now she finds herself on the run from the people she sought to protect. Ryan Kirk's Nightblade is an interesting take on fantasy tropes marred by a reliance on characters inner-thoughts and a distinct lack of action. All too often we are told and not shown, which acts to pull the reader from the story at hand and leads to a degree of disconnection from the characters. Nightblade By: Ryan Kirk Narrated by: Andrew Tell I liked this book despite it describing the rough and seedy lifestyle of this world they live in. The bandits raping and killing a woman, although it wasn't overly graphic, it was rough.
